- Warmth from above, where they look for it. The underside of the plate is the warm surface. Chicks tuck under and press their backs up to it, then walk out to eat and drink, so each one picks its own warmth by moving.
- Raise it as they grow. Each of the four legs slides through its corner and locks with a clip. Set it low for day-olds, lift it as they get taller, or drop one side so the smallest chicks have a lower spot.
- Set the temperature in degrees. A digital controller on the plate shows the reading in red digits. Change it with the buttons or with the remote, from 50 to 158 °F (10 to 70 °C).
- No lamp over the bedding. A heat plate gives off no light, so chicks get dark nights, and there is no glass bulb hanging over the shavings.

After the hatch
Day 21 is the start, not the finish.
For their first weeks, chicks cannot keep themselves warm. Under a hen they would duck in to warm up and come out to eat. The Heat Plate gives them the same thing in a brooder box: one warm surface above their backs, at the height and temperature you set.
Week by week
From the incubator to feathers

Set it up low
Stand the plate in the brooder box a day ahead, legs set low so a day-old chick can touch the underside with its back. Switch it on and let it warm up.

Chicks go under
Move the dry chicks from the incubator to the brooder and show them the plate. They tuck under to warm up and come out for feed and water.

Raise it
As they grow, press the clip under each corner and slide the leg so the plate sits just above their backs.

Let them come and go
Feathered chicks spend less and less time under the plate. Set one side higher than the other so bigger and smaller birds each find a height that suits. When they stop using it, it has done its job.

At night
Dark when it should be dark.
A heat plate warms without lighting the room. The only glow is the red reading on the controller, so chicks rest at night and you can still see the setting from the door.
- No light from the plate itself
- Red digits show the reading
- Remote control, so you can change it without reaching in

From your incubator
Ready before the first pip.
The plate is the next stop after an Ovatekly incubator. Set it up while the eggs are in lockdown, and the brooder is warm when the chicks are dry.
- Height set at each corner
- One plate for a small hatch, several for a big one
